Honeymooning in Costa Rica

Pictures from our honeymoon in Costa Rica. We spent 6 beautiful nights and 7 incredible days in the Paradisus Playa Conchal all-inclusive resort. The resort is part of the private community of Playa Conchal, named such because the beach is not sand, but finely ground conch shell. This relaxed upscale beach community lies on the Pacific coast just south of Brasalito in the Guanacaste province.

Front Landscaping

He took some scenic pictures during this May trip, though there was very little time for sight seeing on this first trip. Zepplin and Cedar (Our Doggies!)

This is where we keep pictures we snap of our two dogs. Zepplin is our Weimaraner/Mutt mix. He is just over 3 years old and is solid black...He looks exactly like a black Wiemaraner, but he's way faster (think Gray Hound). Cedar is our Beagle & Bassett Hound mix. She's just shy of 2 years old...we picked her up on the side of a busy street at about 6 months old and nursed her to the healthy, playful dog that she is now. They get along great and are way too much fun!

We bought a 1998 Mariah 180 Shabah in March of 2006. She's been a fine boat so far and we're very happy to be boaters rather than jet skier. It's a lot easier to relax on the boat than fight the waves all day long!

Over here the big party we all know as Oktoberfest is called "Wies'n". It is basically a state fair with the livestock exchanged for beer. Hopefully these pictures give you an impression of the revelry!

Nymphenberg Schloss

On the western side of Munich you will find the Nymphenberg Schloss (castle), a grand old palace which has been preserved and operates as a museum. The grounds have been transformed into a huge, amazing park which is well used by M�ncheners!

Starnberger See (Oct 7)

About 12 miles to the southwest of Munich lies a beautiful lake known as the Starnberger See. This historical playground of Munich's rich and famous is also the site of "Crazy" King Ludwig II.

We took a ferry ride and enjoyed the scenery... Then we rummaged around a town called Tutzing ("Toot-sing"). We got hungry and had a bite to eat in Starnberg (the lake's namesake city ).

Munich hosts 3 major art galleries at the same intersection. They are the Alten Pinakothek, the Neuen Pinakothek, and the Modernen Pinakothek. We visted the Altes Pinakothek in October on the same day as the Munich Marathon.

Heidelberg

F�ssen - Neuschwanstein

In southern Germany, near the Austrian border, you will find the small, tourist-driven town of F�ssen. This quaint, rural town rests at the end of the regional Deutsch Bahn line. We arrived in a thick fog, but made our way toward the major attractions "Hohenschwangau" and "Neuschwanstein" castles. The fog cleared soon enough and we came out with some great pictures.

On our way back to Munich, we stopped off in Augsburg and made our own walking tour.

Located about a 45 minute train ride west of Munich, Augsburg is the third largest city in Bavaria. Augsburg served as a major trade hub durng the middle ages, which shaped its development. Like much of Bavaria, Augsburg has historically been heavily catholic, which is evidenced by the architecture, statues, and large cathedrals.

Regensburg Germany

In the north of Bavaria, far enough from both Munich and Berlin, Regensburg survived the World Wars nearly unscathed. Set against a late fall atmosphere and some exceptionally lucky timing (we visited the same weekend the city celebrated being named an UNESCO World Heritage City), we had a great long weekend absorbing what Bavaria felt like more than 500 years ago, complete with a series of historical reenactments and a fireworks display.

Bamberg

Tucked away in the hills of Northern Bavaria, one finds the tiny hamlet of Bamberg. Always an important player in regional events, Bamberg maintains a strong draw on tourists by featuring one of the most unique city hall's (Rathaus) in the world. Built on a very small island in the middle of the Danube, the city hall hangs precariously over the edges of the island and seems to be lodged in place partially by the pedstrain bridges that provide access from either side.

Many other remarkable buildings and frescos dot the town, and one must not forget the charm of Little Venice...

Fasching!!

Fasching, known as Carnival or Fat Tuesday to most of us, is a wild celebration here in Munich. Young and old a like dress in wild, fun costumes and goofy attire, head down to Marienplatz, and get, well "blitzed" is the English term.

Danielle went to the early festivities, around noon, when the actual festival and constructive activities took place....

N�rnberg

Just before Christmas, we travelled with Chris's family to Northern Bavaria to visit one of the most famous Christmas markets in the world, the N�rnberg Christkindl Markt. N�rnberg obviously has historical significance from WWII, but many it also has many centuries of more positive events. This trip was entertaining and a little educational.

We visited caves used to protect people and precious art duing WWII (protection from bombs and corrupt Nazi officials), several magnificient churches, the Starbucks, and a fountain depicting the stages of marriage, just to name a few!

Rothenberg ob der Tauber

Billed as the largest, best preserved ancient German town, Rothenberg ob der Tauber certainly lived up the hype. We stayed in the family operated Gasthaus Butz, directly in the middle of town where we enjoyed the atmosphere and Bavarian food!

This pre-Christmas trip was very cold, with some snow falling at times, but this mostly enhanced the scenery and our desire to visit the heated shops and musuems. We spent a few hours in the Rothenberg Criminal History musuem, but we took so many pictures that contrast so sharply with the quaint feeling of Rothenberg that we decided to give it a seperate album.

Rothenberg is home to a very large, extensive Criminal History musuem. A very large collection of artifacts ranging from torture devices, to shame masks and chastity belts, to handcuffs, and even displays about how children who act out in class have been punished over the centuries!

Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg sits on the German-Austrian border at the foot of the Alps, and grew over the years on the wealth of nearby salt mines. Towering above the city is the Festung Hohensalzburg, the "fortified castle above Salzburg", which provided several great photo opportunities.
